The finches were flying up to the birdfeeder and then swooping into the bushes. They looked surprised because at the last second they'd falter in midair and then take cover quickly in a bush, although, some flew to the top of the birdfeeder and sat up there, looking down.
Bizarre, I thought. I went outside to look at the other side of the birdfeeder and this is what I found -- my pet praying mantis!!! She is intimidating EVERYBODY!

Oh good lord, that thing is frigging huge! I would so freak out if I were a bird, too. Heck, I'm a big old human being and it freaks me out. I've never seen one that big before - they come much smaller (thankfully) where I live.
Wow! She's beautiful. The praying mantis has a great significance to the Bushmen of Africa. There is a book about it you may want to look for: Mantis Carol by Laurens van der Post.
Yow! That's a big one. I just saw a terrifying video someone took recently of a praying mantis killing and eating a hummingbird. Maybe those birds saw it too. The mantis is mighty!
Your pics (and her) are gorgeous!!! I went outside to get something from my car the other night, and there were TWO mantises hanging by my porch light (which is always on) just helping themselves to the buffet! I took picsand really should get them uploaded. Mantises are definitely on my top 10 of insects!
Hey, where'd you go?
Aw, yeah, *sniff* where did you go Ms. L? I miss your posts!
I hope you got my Xmas card, and if not, Merry Christmas! :)
